Rolling Door Installation in Chicago, IL, size 24/8, insulated.
Commercial rolling doors it is our job to perform and install roll up doors of different sizes, different colors and different quality. One of our projects took place in Chicago, Illinois, our client built a new building and asked us to install steel rolling door garage doors. We did not say no and got ready for the job. The challenge was to install the right door with the right opener. The client requested a rolling door with door inside the main doors, which was not realized because the door is not insulated and it is impossible to install a small door in an uninsulated rolling door door. In the beginning, the client did not understand the essence; he said that he wanted doors that roll up with the front door, but it was not realized. We installed a CHI rolling door and then decided to install a Mokena Garage Door Opener rolling door opener. Of course, we wanted to install an insulated roll-up door, but this was not within the client’s budget. The result was a bicycle-like roll up door with automatic opening and closing. If you need to repair a rolling door or roll-up patio door for your home or a special glass roll-up door, contact us.

Firstline Garage Door Repair: Rolling Door Installation Guide.
Preparing for Installation.
Evaluate the installation site
- Determine the width of the opening. In our case, this is 24 feet and a height of 8 feet.
- Check the structural integrity of the surrounding walls. Level walls are the key to success; walls without a level floor can create many problems. So check it and correct it if necessary.
- Ensure the floor is level and free of possible obstructions. Also a level floor is very important so that there is no gap between the doors and the floor.
Inspection of Materials
- Open and inventory all parts of the insulated sliding gate. Sometimes, they don’t give you parts for it, which is very negative when installing it. Check the availability of everything.
- Check the integrity of the curtain, tracks, and hardware.
- Lay out tools and safety equipment to facilitate installation. In the photos we have on our website you can see our technicians installing any door. Keep the most important tools on hand at all times, this will save you time on the installation.
Installing the frame
Install guide rails
- Find clear locations for the vertical rails on both jambs. The rails should be installed level and securely. We can use the hardware from the box or buy additional hardware, which may be of better quality than the manufacturer. We use different materials depending on the weight of the rolling door and the base for fixing.
- Use a laser level for perfect alignment.
- The 24″ mounting holes are pre-drilled for secure attachment. In our case, we installed in mettall and drilled holes for the bolts.
Preparing the headliner
- Use sturdy brackets to mount above the doorway. This is very important and will keep the door safe and secure.
- Make sure the bracket is centered and aligned for optimal door performance.
- Install the correct bracket on the door so that it will support the weight of the door. The bracket should be secure in this case; check this process several times.
Door assembly
Integrate the curtain and bottom bar.
- Carefully roll up the insulated curtain on a flat surface.
- Screw on the bottom strip (make sure it is level and tight).
- Add reinforcement if needed for bad weather conditions.
Barrel and spring configuration
- Accurately assemble the barrel parts. We can get the sides confused, so check this process more thoroughly.
- Calculate and assign spring tension to start at the doorway, in our case, 24/8.
- Secure the barrel to the bracket and check to make sure it is level. A positive level is very important.
Installing Curtains
Hanging Process
- Using a hoist, carefully elevator the curtain panel. Before doing so, stack it on a pallet and lift it carefully
- Bring the curtain to the guides and make it flow effortlessly. Check the side once again. You can make a mistake in this, so double-check.
- Securely fasten the curtain to the barrel with the appropriate hardware. Use the right fittings for this, quality and sturdy fittings.
Operational Adjustments
- Adjust spring tension to ensure smooth operation of the door. A good balance is essential to the success of your installation and the continued operation of the door.
- Perform open-close cycles to ensure smooth operation.
- Adjust the settings so that the door reaches the desired locations. The balance should be the same in all opening locations.
Finishing touches
Hardware additions
- Attach handles or pulls to the bottom bar to hold it in place for manual operation.
- Install locks by aligning the lock posts with the rails above.
- Install security sensors, such as photoelectric sensors that monitor edges if your door comes with an opener, in our case, with an opener and remotes.
Weatherproofing
- Weatherproof the rails to improve their insulation.
- Replace the seal at the top to avoid drafts and increase energy savings.
- Use a strong bottom seal to secure the curtain to maximize floor sealing.
In our case, we did not install rails because we were installing the doors inside the building. The above steps need to be done when installing from the outside.Check the door and hand it over to the customer.
