LiftMaster’s new Security+ 3.0 lineup has been rolling out since late 2025, and we’ve now installed enough of these units across Arlington Heights and Schaumburg to give you a real opinion — not a press release summary.
Short version: it’s a genuine improvement. Longer version is below.
What Changed in Security+ 3.0
LiftMaster restructured the entire residential lineup into three clear tiers, which honestly makes the buying decision easier than it used to be:
Basic (2220L / 2420L): Compact DC units for everyday use. The 2420L adds battery backup — important for Chicago-area homeowners who know what a power outage during an ice storm feels like. 5-year warranty.
Plus (6580L): Adds motion-detect lighting, a swivel camera, and battery backup included standard. This is where most of our customers end up. 6-year warranty.
Premium (6690L belt / 4690L chain): Highest-torque DC motors, ring LED lighting, full swivel camera with MyQ Live view, and a lifetime warranty. For heavy doors or homeowners who just want to buy once and be done.
All three have DC motors now — that’s a meaningful change from the old AC units. DC motors are quieter (we’re talking noticeably quieter), run smoother, and are more energy-efficient. If you live in Palatine or Wheeling and your neighbors have been commenting on the noise every time your garage door opens at 6am, this matters.
The other big change: Security+ 3.0 uses new encryption that blocks counterfeit and knock-off accessories. That means older remotes like the 893MAX and 877LM won’t work with these units — worth knowing before you upgrade if you have extra remotes lying around.
What We’ve Seen on Jobs
We haven’t installed enough of these yet to make long-term reliability claims — honestly, it’s too early. But the installation experience has been clean. The rails and brackets are unchanged from Security+ 2.0, so existing rail inventory carries over. Built-in MyQ pairing means we don’t need a ladder to pair wall controls and accessories — that alone saves time on every install.
The cameras are a feature we were a little skeptical about. Built-in cameras on openers have a history of being mediocre. The Plus and Premium swivel cameras on these units are better than we expected. Not replacing a dedicated security camera, but useful for confirming the door closed when you’re halfway to O’Hare and can’t remember.
What This Means for Schaumburg and Arlington Heights Homeowners
If your current opener is more than 8–10 years old, the upgrade math works. The battery backup alone is worth it in our area — Chicago winters don’t ask permission before knocking out your power. Add the camera, the quiet motor, and the lifetime warranty on the Premium tier, and you’re buying something that should outlast the door itself.
If your opener is working fine and it’s under 5 years old, there’s no urgent reason to replace it. But if it’s time, the 3.0 lineup is the best LiftMaster has shipped in years.
