Why Garage Door Insulation Matters: Improving Home Efficiency & Other Benefits

Insulating your garage door is one of the best ways to reduce your home maintenance costs and improve your home’s efficiency. There’s no denying it.
And you’re going to lose a lot of money every year because of a poorly insulated garage – so why not take action?
Professional garage door insulation comes in several forms, but most use polystyrene or polyurethane insulation.
Homemade solutions without professional materials do not offer long-term insulation benefits in the future.
Let Firstline Garage Door Repair show you why you need to insulate your garage door in 2025 and how we can help you do it.

What is garage door insulation?

When insulating a garage door, a professional attaches materials to the inside of the garage door to increase its longevity and efficiency. Just like insulating any other part of your home, additional garage door insulation can significantly reduce your bills and even create a quieter indoor environment. You can avoid this if you live in a warm climate. We are located in Illinois, where winter temperatures are very cold. So we try to keep warm by any means necessary.

Although the work requires an initial investment, quality insulation can pay for itself over time by saving you money on home maintenance. However, you should make sure that you choose high-quality insulation and a reliable company to do the work, and then you can reap the benefits. Don’t use substandard materials, and don’t use a capper that isn’t suitable for your gates.

Insulation R-value explained

If you decide to insulate your garage door, it is worth knowing what the R-value is. Basically, it is a coefficient that shows how effectively the material retains heat in the room. The higher the R-value, the higher the efficiency of heating the room. Every magazine or garage sales brochure says R-value, take heed.
This number is often used in the construction industry to describe thermal resistance and is also an effective way to evaluate the quality of insulation. You don’t have to agonize over the math, but when you insulate your garage door, you increase the R-value of the room inside the garage.
The R-value depends on the thickness of the insulation, the material, and the quality of the work. With that in mind, we’ll take a look at the two best materials for insulating garage doors.

Polystyrene vs polyurethane: The best options for garage door insulation

There are two main materials used to insulate garage doors. The first is polystyrene (Styrofoam), the most affordable option. While it is not particularly thick, it increases efficiency and suppresses some outside noise. Polystyrene insulation is generally easy to install, which reduces labor costs. We mainly use only this material. It is very good in operation and is suitable for all non-insulated doors. A professional will install this material on a door for two cars within one hour.
The other main option for garage door insulation is polyurethane, a high-quality product that provides a more thorough job. Homeowners who choose polyurethane insulation for their garage doors may notice a 40% reduction in energy consumption, emphasizing how efficient insulation can be when installed properly. All manufacturers use this material in a liquid state in their factories. During the production process, this material is poured into the inside of the section, which will then be insulated on both sides with metal. This material is used only in fully insulated doors, which are called fully insulated doors. All such doors have a high R-value and are more expensive. Therefore, if you need a warm door, invest your money in a polyurethane door and install it. And you will get better results than polystyrene doors.
Ultimately, polystyrene has a lower R-value than polyurethane, but it’s a viable option if you want to insulate your garage door on a budget. Polystyrene is also easy to install and use.

The advantages of garage door insulation for your home

Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why you might want to undertake garage door insulation a viable home improvement project this year:

Increased energy efficiency

The main reason to insulate a garage door is to improve the efficiency of your home. Sealing and insulating your garage door is the best way to prevent heat loss, save on household energy bills, and make your home more energy efficient.

Less noise from the outside

Another benefit of insulating your garage door is that it is an additional noise barrier. If you live on a busy street, this can make a massive difference to the noise levels within your home.

Depending on the insulation thickness you install, your garage space might become practically soundproof, making it suitable for much more than storage.

Better use of the space

An insulated garage door means a warmer winter and cooler summer interior, giving you the best of both worlds. Therefore, you can make much better use of the space to store different things.

You might even consider repurposing the garage. With an insulated door in place, you could use the space as a home gym or office, given that you have more control over the internal temperature.

Enhanced durability

Although you will need to spend money in the short term to insulate your garage door, the end result will see a significant improvement regarding durability.

The insulation will protect the garage door panels from the wind, rain, and other external issues that aren’t in your control.

People with insulated garage doors also notice they’re more pest, weather, and draught resistant, making their home environment much more comfortable.

Protection from carbon monoxide

A lesser-known benefit of insulating your garage door is to offer protection from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. If you regularly leave your car running on the driveway, carbon monoxide can seep into the garage.

Carbon monoxide (CO) exposure worsens during the winter months in cold climates, so insulating your garage to protect your family is a smart move.

What about the drawbacks?

The main disadvantage of opting for garage door insulation is the initial cost. We discuss the costs of insulation in more detail below, but it’s something to consider when weighing the pros and cons.

You also need to consider the type of garage door that you have, as not all makes and models are suitable for insulation. Equally, if your door is in poor condition, you might need to undertake repairs before proceeding with the insulation.

The thickness of your garage door will also impact the insulation that you choose. Thicker doors typically require less insulation, but if your garage doors are thin, it will cost more to keep the heat in.

Overview of the pros & cons of garage door insulation

Though we’ve gone into the advantages and drawbacks in detail above, here’s an overview of the pros and cons of garage door insulation before we explain the process in more detail:

Garage door insulation: How the process works

Professional garage door insulation is a simple job. The process starts with a professional coming to your home to measure your garage door and recommend the best insulation option. The condition of the door should also be checked to see if the insulation can be installed or if repairs are needed.
You will then need to decide what type of insulation to install. As already mentioned, it is best to use polystyrene, and polybutene is preferably used in new doors. If you decide to insulate with polyriatnam, it is better for you to order a new door, which will be equipped with polyriutanoam insulation.
When installing polystyrene, our technician uses a special tool and, step by step lays liters of insulation in a special opening in the garage door. We do not recommend that you do this. A very important moment is suitable when removing the bottom brackets that work together with the cables is necessary. This process requires special skills.

How much does garage door insulation cost?

Research shows that the average cost of installing an insulated garage door in the United States is between $1,100 and $4,200. The price depends on the materials used, the door’s size and the insulation’s desired R-value.

However, the cost of insulating a pre-fixed door will be significantly less than this. Around $350-$550. The insulation itself, particularly polystyrene insulation, is not that expensive. The main cost attached to the project will be labor, but given the long-term improvements in your home’s energy efficiency, the insulation will eventually pay for itself.

Though we advise you to call in the experts for garage door insulation, you can always do it yourself if money’s tight. We explain some of the things you need to consider before undertaking a DIY garage door insulation project in one of the following sections.

Garage door insulation vs buying a thicker door: Which is best?

Although garage door insulation is a costly endeavor, it’s much cheaper than buying a new garage door, as illustrated above.

Decent garage doors should be at least one inch thick, but the thicker your door is, the more protection you have from the elements outside. Adding a layer of insulation to your current garage door can be a cost-effective alternative to replacing your current, thin door.

That said, if you’ve been thinking about installing a new garage door for a while now to improve the energy efficiency of your home, investing in a new, thicker door is also an option.

Garage door insulation DIY - What to know

Believe it or not, garage door insulation DIY kits are available online and in some home improvement stores in the United States. Though the quality of these kits varies significantly, they usually consist of multifoil insulation and are more of a semi-permanent solution.

Sure, they can help to improve your home’s energy efficiency in the winter, but they’re not ideal if you’re looking for a long-term, permanent solution.

You may also be able to purchase vinyl-faced fiberglass or expanded EPS foam panels, which have a higher R-value than multifoil kits. However, the issue comes with installing the insulation, including which tools to use and how to ensure the insulation is correctly fitted to the garage doors.

We use materials from different garage door manufacturers that we buy from suppliers.
